NAPILI — While the cancellations of spring interscholastic athletic seasons continue across the state, the Maui Preparatory Academy Pueo have exhibited remarkable perseverance in maintaining some semblance of meaningful competition.

These independent tournaments provide youth student-athletes the opportunity to compete, and for some — especially the seniors — for the very last time.

Led by Athletic Director and College Counselor Keenan Reader, the Maui Prep volleyball, golf, tennis, surfing and track and field teams maintained their preparation for the Maui Interscholastic League 2021 campaign that may never materialize.

In mid-April, Maui Prep hosted a four team club tournament sponsored by the Mayor’s Office. Rosters from Lahainaluna, St. Anthony, Haleakala Waldorf and Maui Prep participated in the event won by Lahaina Volleyball.

The Pueo team was coached by Ryan Kirkham, Kia Kenolio and Keo Hill, and the roster was made up of seniors Jolene Munch, Lily Bourland, Charlton Hannon, Keeana Villamar, Jordan Houglum and Hoku Godoy; sophomores Tesa Chin and Marqaux Perchard; and eighth-grader Avery Kirkham.

The girls and boys golf teams have had several scrimmages with Seabury Hall over recent weeks. Dan Martin is the Pueo girls coach, and the team is made up of Grace Martin, Namahina Kawabata and Kapua Coon.

The tennis teams have also held scrimmages with Seabury to maintain their competitive edge. The head coach is Gonzaloo Blanco, and the assistants are Erin Lepone and Lisa Poulson.

The team roster consists of seniors Nolan Brown, Peyton Gillespie, Issac Hessel, Aiesha Pradhan, Keeana Villamar and Sofie Webber; juniors Noah Schwartzlow, Jenna Jordan, Jacob Jerome and Aiden Bluh; sophomores Madison Becker, Aiden Brown, Victoria Campbell, Gracie Hehemann, Mia Merrill and Andrew Webber; and first-year players Lila Brown, Luka Boote and Zack Aldineh.

The MIL surfing season was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns, but a club event is scheduled for mid-May at Hookipa.

The coaching staff is headed up by Matty Schweitzer, and his assistants are Rob Lloyd, Duane Ignacio and Joshua Riccio.

The team roster includes seniors Paloma Banto, Ozzi Doherty, Slater Fleck, Jordan Houglum and Ashley Nielson, juniors Caden Wheeler, Zoe Gonzales, James Falk and Dylan Falk; sophomores Niko Banto, Cameron Burns and Samara Cook; and freshman Pierce Armstrong.

Sandy Henry coaches the Maui Prep track and field team that competes in the 10- to 13-year-old Division at Valley Isle Track Club meets.

The team includes eighth-graders Donovan Capozzola and Lola Doherty, seventh-graders Cameron Henry and Jack Leone, and sixth-graders William Levy and Thomas Gage.

The Upper School roster is made up of seniors Ozzi Doherty and Sydney Snyder; sophomores Hailey Chang, Lilly Hill, Nathan Mokan and Luseane Taufa; and freshmen Bishop Worth, Legend Storer, Hazel Lynn, Zion Lentz, Coen Fitzgerald, Jacques Djurberg and Pierce Armstrong.
