Evelyn Haase accepts two scholarship recognitions from Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset President-elect Ryan Beenken at the recent Senior Awards Assembly at Molokai High School.

LAHAINA – The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset last week announced the recipients of the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation Scholarship and the “Go for the Green” Scholarships.

Two students each received the $2,500 “Go for the Green” Scholarships. These scholarships were presented to the selected students who will be attending an accredited college and must be pursuing a field of study that will benefit the environment.

Evelyn Haase from Molokai High School and Kaohulani Palakiko from Lahainaluna High School were the recipients of the “Go for the Green” Scholarships.

Evelyn will be attending Reed College in Portland, Oregon and will be majoring in Environmental Science.

Kaohulani will attend Boise State University and study Business with a minor in Environmental Science.

Kaohulani Palakiko received one of the two “Go for the Green” Scholarships presented by the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset.

Both recipients have indicated that they wish to return to their island home to pursue their careers after earning their collegiate degrees.

Haase was also awarded the club’s Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation (HRYF) $5,000 scholarship.

HRYF is a nonprofit charitable organization whose main objective is to provide scholarships for Hawaii youth to further their education after high school.

Each of the 52 Rotary Clubs in District 5,000 were able to select a scholarship recipient for this $5,000 award.

Evelyn said, “I have developed a deep respect for Hawaiian culture and the environment that sustains us; thus, I have selected to pursue a degree in Environmental Science with a focus in biology and/or political science.”

The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset is one of ten Rotary Clubs located on Maui and Lanai.

Rotary is a leadership organization made up of local business, professional and civic leaders.
