Rotary Club to award two academic scholarships

The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset presented one of the two 2020 Go for the Green $2,500 Scholarships to Maria Angst from Molokai High School. She is currently attending University of San Diego majoring in Environmental and Ocean Science with a minor in Business Administration.
LAHAINA–The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset is awarding two $2,500 academic scholarships to two graduating seniors who live in West Maui, Hana or Molokai and attend a Maui or Molokai high school.
The students should demonstrate superior academic abilities, involvement in school activities, a winning character profile and must be pursuing a field of study that will benefit the environment.
The scholarship highlights the club’s commitment to support the educational goals of local youth.
“Knowledge is power, and we are thrilled to help a senior student reach his or her educational goals,” said Kelsey Briggs, Youth Service chair.
“We’re pleased to support the education of two local students who will have the opportunity to continue sustainability efforts on Maui well into the future.”
The academic awards also reflect the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s focus on environmental initiatives — a core mission that is realized through sustainability projects.
These projects include the La’au Ha’awi Maui tree planting program, the installation and maintenance of more than 35 rescue tubes at West Maui beach parks and the “Go Green” Saturday Recycling in conjunction with Malama Maui Nui and 5A Rent-a-Space.
The application deadline is May 1, 2021. To receive a scholarship application, or to learn more, e-mail Briggs at kelseymbriggs.kb@gmail.com.
