Hobby leads to bakery business for Maui couple
KAANAPALI – Known for their No Ka ‘Oi Cinnamon Rolls – with a rotation of ten different flavors to choose from – Sweet Aloha Baking Company recently opened at the Fairway Shops in Kaanapali.
Open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., the gourmet specialty baking company is owned by the husband and wife team of Anthony and Victoria Briggs.
“All of our fresh baked goods are made by hand daily using all natural ingredients and lots of aloha,” Victoria noted.
In addition to the cinnamon rolls, the bakery also makes fresh hot Malasadas every morning from 8 to 10 a.m. (or until they sell out).
For breakfast, there are muffins, banana breads, coffee cake and croissants. For an afternoon treat, they bake cookies, cakes, cupcakes, brownies, cheesecakes and more.
“We’ve also just recently added fresh baked baguettes to our menu that are hot out of the oven every day at noon. We also offer small special occasion cakes with advanced notice,” she added.
Victoria started baking regularly when she was pregnant with their first daughter, Ella. Surrounded by banana and avocado trees at home in Makawao, she began baking banana bread on a weekly basis, then added cookies, pies and cakes to her repertoire.
“After our second daughter, Olivia, was born, I wanted to create a Christmas morning tradition of baking cinnamon rolls. I thought the preparation the night before and the wonderful aroma of them baking in the morning would create lasting memories for our girls. Christmas morning while they were baking, a tradition was born! They were DELICIOUS! Over the years, I have tweaked and perfected the recipes for my cinnamon rolls and signature cream cheese frosting,” she explained.
“It was Christmas 2011 when my nephew, Michael, came to Maui and tried one of my cinnamon rolls. He told me they are better than a national cinnamon roll chain… and that I should be selling them! That is what sparked the idea for our original business, No Ka ‘Oi Cinnamon Rolls.”
The couple eventually added cheesecakes, loaf breads, cookies, brownies and more, and became a full-fledged wholesale bakery.
For six years, they delivered their sweets to many restaurants, coffee shops, boats and hotels on the West Side.
Their big dream was realized when they built their own bakery and retail location, opening their doors in February.
