First Ever Cutino Award Finalist for Rainbow Wahine
HONOLULU — The University of Hawai’i women’s water polo program added another accolade to a landmark season with the Rainbow Wahine represented among the finalists for the Peter J. Cutino Award, the most prestigious honor in collegiate water polo.
The Olympic Club announced the finalists for the award on Tuesday and UH center Bia Mantellato Dias was joined by two goalkeepers — California’s Isabel Williams and UCLA’s Lauren Steele — in this year’s group, marking the first time the Rainbow Wahine have been included in the top three. The 2024 recipient will be announced at the 25th Cutino Awards ceremony on June 1 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
The Rainbow Wahine closed a historic season at No. 3 in the national polls — the highest final ranking in program and Big West history — after going 23-4 and sweeping the conference regular-season and tournament titles. UH went 10-0 in Big West play and set a program record with an .852 overall winning percentage. The ‘Bows advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s National Collegiate Water Polo Championship in Berkeley, Calif., becoming the first Big West school to reach the NCAA’s final four since 2013.
The Peter J. Cutino Award, named in honor of the late Hall of Fame coach, was established in 1999 to honor the outstanding Division I collegiate male and female athlete in the sport of water polo. The ceremony will be live-streamed at Overnght.com.
