Maui Prep senior Pierce Armstrong has inked a letter of intent to continue his running and academic career at the Rome City Institute in the Eternal City.
Pierce, the current MIL champion in the men’s 400-meter dash, will join the Lions’ track team as a middle- and long-distance runner. Pierce was a fixture on the Maui Prep Cross Country and Track and Field teams, advancing to the state championships in both sports. He most recently finished 25th at the state Cross Country meet in November.
Pierce joined Maui Prep ‘ohana in fall 2020 as a freshman. His teachers and administrators immediately recognized the quiet confidence and leadership Pierce exudes. Athletic Director and former track and field coach Zach Bailey describe Pierce as, “cool, calm and collected. He also complimented Pierce’s work ethic, a trait that was unanimously echoed by coaches Cynthia Monteleone and Robert “Bully” Kotter, who were on hand to support Pierce and his family at this event. Kotter first met Pierce at Breakwall and recognized Pierce, “[is] a light and shines bright.” Monteleone, an elite and decorated runner herself, coached Pierce as he honed his craft in the tenacious 400-meter run. “He took direction well and memorized and executed race strategy,” she noted.
Principal Ryan Kirkham acknowledged that middle distance runners are a breed unto their own, tackling a distance that demands execution, grit and resilience to be successful.
“Middle distance runners have a screw loose,” Kirkham quipped. “To be an elite level runner is a long-term investment and a reflection of hard work and dedication.”
Pierce thanked his supporters who gathered at the Bozich Center to witness him commit to his next adventure. Head of School Dr Miguel Solis, Academic Dean Dr Lisa Zamora, College Counselor Keenan Reader and Director of Admission Dr Liz Turcik also reflected on Pierce’s growth throughout his high school career. Pierce in turn thanked the administration, noting, “Maui Prep gave kids like me an opportunity to be something.”
In addition to running, Pierce was a member of the 2023 boys surfing team that claimed the MIL team title. He looks to defend his MIL title in the upcoming track and field season before landing in Rome in August 2023. Pierce is the son of Kelly and Sabine Armstrong of Kahana.
