Lahaina Wrestling Club competes at Turf Wars USA Wrestling Championships

Lahaina Wrestling Club athletes won several medals at the Turf Wars USA Wrestling Championships last month at Farmington, Utah.

LAHAINA — Youth wrestling on the West Side achieved a strong performance at the Turf Wars USA Wrestling Championships last month at Farmington, Utah.

The club, in partnership with Team Hawaii, sent 12 competitors to the event to compete in the Turf War and Western States championships. They competed in three styles, including Freestyle, Greco-Roman, and Folkstyle.

For the Dual Tournament, wrestlers competed on Day 1 in Freestyle wrestling, and on Day 2 they competed in Greco-Roman.

For the Western States Championships that lasted three days, the team competed in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman, as well as Folkstyle on the last day of the tournament.

The Team Hawaii Women’s team, comprised of women from all across the islands, placed fourth in Greco-Roman and third in Freestyle. The Team Hawaii Men finished seventh in Greco-Roman and sixth in Freestyle.

The individual results had Naiomi Kulukulualani Sales with a second in Freestyle, second in Greco-Roman and third in Folkstyle; Kivah Caballero with second in Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Folkstyle; Teani Medeiros Maielua with second in Freestyle and Greco-Roman; Crystin Dior Treu with fourth in Greco-Roman and second in Folkstyle; and Catherine Asami finishing first in Freestyle, second in Greco-Roman and first in Freestyle.

Other medal winners included Shansi Boaz Vasquez (fourth in Freestyle and first in Greco-Roman), Salamasina Borden Phillips (fourth in Freestyle and fifth in Greco-Roman), Ikaika Gonzales (fourth in Freestyle and Greco-Roman, and first in Folkstyle), Sanalio Vehikite (first in Freestyle, second in Greco-Roman and third in Folkstyle), Jarret Koyama (fifth in Folkstyle), and Ryder Armitage (fourth in Greco-Roman and Folkstyle).

All in all an outstanding effort by the Lahaina Wrestling Club in conjunction with Team Hawaii. The team is led by coaches Na’o Ah Puck, Terry Shibao, Christian Balagso and Ivy Navarro.

Congratulations to the entire program, including the family and community support groups that enabled them to represent Hawaii at the prestigious competition.
