By BY WALTER CHIHARA - | May 5, 2023

Both Lahainaluna High School surfing teams finished third in the MIL.

LAHAINA — In his second year at the helm of the Lahainaluna High School surfing program, Coach Andy Claydon guided both the girls and boys teams up the Maui Interscholastic League standings to third place finishes.

The competitions were held at D.T. Fleming Beach Park, Koki Beach in Hana and at Lahaina Harbor. The individual MIL Championships were held at Hookipa Beach Park on Saturday, April 29.

Coach Claydon is assisted by Nicholas Miller and Lara Claydon in guiding the Luna team.

The Lunas girls roster includes seniors Melia Wall, Ka’imi Kaleleiki and Jaimie Kenny, as well as Gianna Pogni, Mia Kosianowski, Imani Caserta and Loreen Ramirez Valasquez.

The boys team lineup includes seniors Noah Arnold and Shad Blando, along with Avery Baybayan, Dylan Riley, Ryder Armitage, Makana Kanekoa, Jake McGill, Lawakua Hai’a Shim, Preston Armstrong, Kamden Hart, Hunter West and Assure Mann.

“We’ve had a fun season, and it’s been great to see the team grow throughout the year,” said Coach Andy last week. “Our thanks goes out to Kim Ball for his support of MIL surfing as the only DOE-sanctioned program in the state. And to Athletic Director Jon Conrad, Athletic Trainers Schuyler Withington and Mike Griffo, and all the parents and families that helped out — especially during our camp out at Hana for the Koki Beach meet.”
