Lahainaluna High School track coach Cynthia Monteleone will travel to Poland in March to compete on Team USA in the WMA Indoor World Championships.

WEST MAUI — The positive strides of the West Side’s Cynthia Monteleone continue, as she will be a part of Team USA at the WMA Indoor World Championships in Torun, Poland this coming March 26 to April 4.

The married mother of three, track coach, athletic health author and public display artist will be switching from the 400-meter run to the Pentathlon and also competing in relays.

Monteleone set WMA records for the 400 last year and has now expanded her competitive drive to the Pentathlon.

The indoor Pentathlon consists of five events in one day. They include the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and a flat race.

Monteleone added that she is still coaching Olympic athletes in metabolic health, including Lindon Victor, who visited Maui last year and presented the Yamamoto Award.

Victor went on to break the national record at Grenada in the Decathlon, winning his second Commonwealth Games gold medal.

“He was a great inspiration to the Lahainaluna track team when he visited,” said Lunas coach Monteleone.

She is married to Zane Monteleone, who recently stepped up to take over the reins of the Lahainaluna High School wrestling team, as longtime head coach Todd Hayase has stepped down from the elite position.

They have three children, and daughter Margaret, a Luna senior, is a state finalist hurdler who is being recruited to several Division I programs, including the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Coach Cynthia continues her commitment to the Lahaina community in painting murals for the nonprofit Lahaina Mural Arts Project that covers graffiti-spoiled walls in the area of Princess Nahienaena Elementary School with colorful paintings. The organization also mentors special needs kids.

In their “spare” time, the couple has opened a breakfast food truck at Launiupoko called Maui Breakfast that is open every morning from 7 to 11 a.m.
