LAHAINA — The Automatic weighed a nice marlin for Ryan Incerpi at 395.5 pounds. He was fishing with Captain Jonny Kiley and Deckman Parker Betz.
They were 150 fathoms outside the ledge when Jonny heard the line come out of the short rigger clip. He turned around and knew it was a good fish by the way the line was ripping off the spool. The marlin took off on a 250- to 300-yard run, jumping for the first couple of minutes before it settled down.
Parker cleared the short corner lure as Jonny started chasing after the fish.
Ryan did a good job on the reel, keeping the line tight and gaining line. After about ten minutes, Jonny got up on top of it. At that point, it was about 150 yards deep.
Jonny started to plane the marlin for the next 10-15-minutes, slowly gaining a little bit of line. As they got it closer, Jonny started to follow it in reverse, doing 360 circles trying to change up the attack.
The fish made a quick 50-yard run. Parker pushed up the drag as Ryan worked it back up over the next couple of minutes. The marlin was swimming away as it came up to leader. Parker tried to grab leader, but the fish was not ready to come in.
The marlin finally turned and started coming with the boat. The second time to leader, Parker was able to grab the leader and hold on.
He got a wrap as it cut across to the starboard side. Parker got ahead of it and took a second wrap. He kept wrapping and pulling it up to the boat.
Parker held the marlin on the starboard corner as Jonny got it secured.
Parker stated, “That fish kicked my okole.” It was the most challenging fish he had leadered.
Most of his marlin had been 125- to 150-pounders, and this one his biggest fish so far.
