West Maui students improving in basketball with Westside Hoops

Westside Hoops offers a summer travel program to attend clinics and tournaments on the U.S. West Coast.
LAHAINA — One of Lahaina’s most successful youth sports programs, Westside Hoops, was on the verge of collapse following the pandemic cancellations of the last two years.
Enter energetic Zach Garrison to work with founder Dan Williams and the Kumulani Chapel church organization to keep the hoops dreams alive for the current generation of youngsters.
Coach Dan started Westside Hoops 12 years ago and continued to provide the youth of the community the opportunity to learn the skills and teamwork of the game of basketball.
Working alongside of the historically successful West Maui Youth Basketball League, Westside Hoops set up a club program for 40 middle and high school age kids to continue to play and hone their skills beyond the traditional winter months of the sport.
Coach Dan and Westside Hoops organized a summer travel program that took up to ten high school age kids to the Mainland. The group would stay with a host family in Carson City, Nevada, from early June to mid-July and play in tournaments and participate in clinics all across the Western U.S.
The program worked various fundraisers — car washes, community service projects, scholarships, civic improvement efforts, and more — to raise the funds needed to cover the expenses for the Mainland trip.
Coach Garrison, who is assisted by Dan Decker, Andrew Chapman and Crosby Beam, also noted the major contributions and support of Kumulani Chapel in the success of Westside Hoops.
“We’ve been truly blessed and have experienced divine timing in all that is happening with this program,” said Coach Zach.
“We are so grateful for the Kumulani Chapel support. It provides the direction and opportunity for the travel team and for the middle school open gym program all year round at the Lahaina Civic Center.”
Committed players for the summer trip are Jajah Bayol, Flynn Williams, Levi Basurto, and Jacque Djurberg.
