Lahainaluna boys volleyball team moves to the top rungs of the MIL

The Lunas were in second place heading into the postseason tournament this week.
LAHAINA — The Lahainaluna High School boys volleyball team remained in the thick of the Maui Interscholastic League championship race as the conference title matches were played out this week.
The Lunas completed the regular season in second place behind Kamehameha Schools Maui heading into the postseason tournament to decide the overall championship and tickets to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Tournament.
Led by head coach Marc Watasaki, the Lunas parlayed a strong work ethic in practice and communication skills on the court to move to the top rungs of the MIL 2022 standings.
“We are inexperienced, but the student-athletes dedicated the time to perfect their skills, and all of the players contributed to our success in many different ways. We are always on the same page,” explained Coach Marc last week.
He is assisted this season by Sean Gordon and Ioane Hoomanawanui, and the player roster includes seniors Jonahs Kalalau, Denver Duque, Kanej Anej, Tongikimoanahelotu Tauese and Benjamin Lolesio; juniors Avery Dagupion, Troy Concepcion, Dominador Damaso, Kaedin Hanohano, Kaha’o Murray, Maison Alexander and Joshua Dagulo; and sophomore Noa Gordon.
Varsity team managers were Angel Camagay, Kailani Medeiros Sodetani and Keana Medeiros Sodetani.
The Lahainaluna junior varsity team played a limited schedule and was guided by head coach Ben Cardon and assistants Fritz Carino, Patricia Nebrida and Mharicar Tan.
Team managers included Kryzelle Larobis, Jazmin Mathias and Kamaile Morton.
“We really had a great turnout at our home games this year. We’ve never had that kind of support in previous years, and the team is truly grateful to the families and the Lahaina community for that,” said Coach Watasaki.
“So, to everyone who came out to support us; to our Athletic Director, Jon Conrad; as well as Trainers Rebecca Cohen and Mike Griffo, thank you so very much,” he concluded.
