LAHAINA — Lahainaluna High School was honored to host the 67th annual Satoki Yamamoto Track and Field meet on March 26 at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku.
Luna co-head coach Cynthia Monteleone served as master of ceremonies and introduced Olympic Decathlete Lindon Victor as the special guest presenter for the competition.
Coach Monteleone, assisted by co-head coach Zane Monteleone, Anis Bell, Robbie Kudlich, Christopher Meares, Simone Alves, Bob Dezotell and Lauren Amano, reported that the Luna teams made a strong showing at the event in the return to the track after two years of competition stifled by the pandemic.
The boys team finished fourth overall, spearheaded by a silver medal in the 4 x 100-meter relay (Thomas Borges, Hoku “Samurai” Hironaka, Blare Silva Viela, C-Jay Caguioa) and a bronze in the 4 x 400-meter relay (Silva Viela, Timothy Heile, Donovan Kahi Magno, Thomas Borges).
Silva Viela also earned points for Lahainaluna with a second place time of 11.32 in the 100-meter. And in the 400-meter final, Heile — who has been setting personal records at every meet — placed second with a time of 54.8.
“All of the boys on the team set personal bests at the meet, with many making it to the finals on the second day,” said Coach Cynthia. “And the girls team, consisting of just four girls, placed eighth overall.”
The Lady Lunas were led by Margaret Oneal Monteleone with a bronze medal in the high jump with a 4’5″ best, and she anchored the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay teams with Cadence Ako, Haley Mahoe and Arabella Silao.
In conclusion, Coach Cynthia expressed her gratitude to special guest coach and award presenter Victor, who is a metabolic client and friend.
A current Olympic decathlete, Victor is a world record holder in the decathlon discus. He has won many titles and medals, including multiple SEC titles, NCAA championships and Pan Am games titles.
He competed for Grenada in both the Rio and Tokyo Olympics.
“Lindon is currently training for the World Championships this summer in Eugene, Oregon, and for the next Olympics in Paris, France. It was an honor and a pleasure to have Lindon Victor present to provide a positive, encouraging influence on the kids and to help us remember fondly the legend of Satoki Yamamoto, one of the greatest founders of track and field here on Maui,” she said.
