The Lahainaluna High School baseball team opened its season last week against Kamehameha Maui.

LAHAINA — After not hitting the diamond since the spring of 2020, the Lahainaluna High School baseball team returned to the field in February for a preseason trip to Oahu that included scrimmages and games against several Oahu squads.

The Lunas also played in a Maui Interscholastic League preseason tournament two weeks ago. The official MIL season started last week as the Lunas played Kamehameha Maui in the league opener at Maehara Stadium in Wailuku.

“After two years of COVID restrictions, we are excited to get the chance to play again,” said Lunas Head Coach Danton Hong last week. “I’m sure those who enjoy baseball are looking forward to watching some games as well.”

“Our team’s strength comes from our core group of senior players; however, we have some underclassmen to fill in quite well.”

The roster of 21 players is well-balanced with eight seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen.

The 2022 Lahainaluna player roster includes Trebor Keahi, Dane Markulis, Chevus Nahooikaika, Taj Acio, Ryan Pagdilao, Talan Toshikiyo, Justice Carino, Nephi Hong, Aiden Arnise, Pono Kuluhiwa Kim, Noah Gonzales, Troy Branco Liu, Vincent Iwamura, Ivan Aguinaldo, Locklin Maier, Aukai Hokoana, Tony Felice, Kealaula Medeiros, Lyrik Kahula, Dwight Saterlee and Josh Saterlee.

Coach Danton’s assistants are Emmett Markulis, Harry Flores, James Smythe, Jamie Smythe, Danton Hong, Kaleo Medeiros, Jeff Felice, and Darren Opunui.

“I’d like to thank our parents and families of Lahainaluna baseball for being positive and supportive for the team. Thank you also to all of the coaches who had a part, even if just a little, in teaching the kids baseball. We know that experience led these players to where they are today. They are a dedicated group of coaches wanting to help these young men succeed in baseball and in life as well. And thanks also to Athletic Director Jon Conrad, Trainers Rebecca Cohen and Mike Witt and to the Moore Foundation for their continued support of our program,” he said.
