Michella Cabingas and Caehlaen Wyatt Balmores took their Shodan exam on May 21, 2021.

LAHAINA — The presentation of highly coveted Japan Karate Shotokai Dan (Black Belt) certificates to two Lahaina Dojo teenagers highlighted the afternoon practice at the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission two weeks ago.

The documents officially recognize Michella Cabingas and Caehlaen Wyatt Balmores for their diligent effort over years of practice with the Lahaina organization in attaining Shodan, or first-degree black belt ranking, within the guidelines of the highly regarded traditional Shotokan Karate Do system.

Cabingas, 15, is a sophomore at Lahainaluna High School. The youngest of Michael and Lisa Cabingas’ three children, Michella followed in the footsteps of siblings Zachary and Taryn in practicing karate.

She has practiced with the Lahaina Dojo for eight years and also enjoys all ocean sports and loves playing the piano, trombone and any musical instrument she can get her hands on.

Balmores also attends Lahainaluna as a 14-year-old freshman. The son of Everett and Criselyn Balmores has been practicing karate for four years and has been recognized as one of the program’s most consistent and diligent students.

Caehlaen also enjoys playing video games such as Fortnite and Minecraft.

Both Michella and Caehlaen recognized their parents for their continuing support in their lives, as well as their teachers in the Lahaina Complex schools.

The Lahaina Dojo Japan Karate Shotokai program was founded some 40 years ago by the legendary Jeffrey “Hulk” Zaugg and has continued throughout the years to offer traditional martial arts instruction to children and adults of all ages — from seven to 77.
