Brown achieves fitness goal of 2,110 bodyweight squats

Jerry Brown was filmed completing 2,110 bodyweight squats in 1:34:37 at The Club Maui in Lahaina. A “Squat Tracker” showed his progress.
KAANAPALI — After doing 1,005 pushups in one set in February, Kaanapali resident Jerry Brown decided that he “didn’t want to leave the image of a ‘one-trick pony.’ “
So, the 68-year-old fitness and martial arts expert recently achieved 2,110 bodyweight squats in 1:34:37 at The Club Maui in Lahaina.
“I know that’s a really weird number, but after doing 2,000 I decided to do another 100. I wasn’t really tired as much as I was BORED! At 2,100, I decided to do ten more just in case I had a miscount,” he said.
The former Army soldier focuses on accomplishing all-around fitness and developing “functional muscle,” not getting bigger like many weight lifters.
“Right now, ‘functional’ is defined as teaching my Combat Fighting Class,” he explained. “As a soldier for 20 years, muscle mass was counterproductive to having to carry a heavy rucksack, weapon and other necessary items. Cardio and endurance have always been the greatest needs for a soldier, along with mental toughness. That belief is why I decided to see how many squats I could do along with the pushups.”
Brown makes sure he completes a full range of motion during squats — going down all the way to parallel with the ground.
“I am somewhat limited because of my age and arthritis, but I try to go a little below parallel each rep,” he added.
Brown has a video of his fitness feat on his Facebook page.
The day after doing more than 2,100 squats, Brown was only a little tired but not sore. He went to the gym and did his typical workout.
He said, “However, the second day is when I paid the price in energy and muscle fatigue! Ask any squatter and they will tell you, ‘It’s not the first day after that hurts — it’s the second day and beyond!’ I took the next three days off entirely!”
Brown is planning another exercise goal before Thanksgiving Day: 3,000 abs in one set.
He wrote, “That would consist of repeated evolutions of 50 full SIT-UPS with no one holding my feet; 10 REVERSE SIT-UPS — legs straight out, bend them and bring them over my body and touch them to my shoulders, then stick them straight again (feet cannot touch the ground); LEG LIFTS — legs together, held 1-2 inches above the ground, lift them up about 25-30 degrees then lower them without touching the ground; SCISSOR CROSSES — legs cross back and forth without touching the ground, and both legs crossing each other equals ONE rep; HALF SITUPS with a pause at the top; and finally FLUTTER KICKS — same as scissors, both legs go up and down to equal ONE rep.”
On top of that, “I’ll be 70 in less than 18 months, and I may do ONE more crazy thing,” he said.
In addition to the physical challenge, Brown’s exercise goals require mental toughness.
“Within the last month, I’ve had three people ask me to teach them how to NOT QUIT, as is required in any kind of any endurance feat or anything that truly HURTS, like fighting,” Brown noted.
“I, too, had to learn to not quit! I was not mentally tough naturally.”
