Maui Prep spring sports teams look to rise in the MIL rankings

The Maui Preparatory Academy boys golf team is off to a 3-0 start, and the girls team is back in action after a three-year hiatus.

NAPILI – Maui Preparatory Academy Pueo athletics continue to fly high into the spring season, with the surfing, golf, tennis, and track and field teams all looking to move up in the Maui Interscholastic League standings.

The surf team is led by first-year coach Matty Schweitzer and assistant coaches Josh Riccio, Kalani Ross, Duane Ignacio and Rob Lloyd. The girls team has finished in the top rungs of the MIL the past five years and is led by Ashley Nielson in the bodyboard category, while the boys team is led by standout 2019 medalists Ty Kirby (bodyboard) and Tony Nunez (shortboard).

The team roster includes seniors Dylan Smart, Harrison Cramond and Nadine Cunha; juniors Yaelle Ador, Jolene Munch, Jordan Houglum, Slater Fleck and Ozzi Doherty; sophomores Beatriz Alliaga, Maya Frank and Zoe Gonzales; and first-year competitors Cameron Burns and Niko Banto.

The Pueo boys golf team is off to a 3-0 start and definitely in contention for a league title, while the girls team is back in action after a three-year hiatus.

Chris Armanini is in his third year as head coach of the boys, assisted by John Kennedy and Chris Black, while the girls’ lineup is led by Dan Martin.

The boys are led by standouts Dylan Jonke, Caleb Chumley and Griffin Gibson, and the roster includes Mathew Cahill, Dylan Falk, James Falk, Hunter Higgins and Jerone Samari. The girls roster is made up of Emily Partridge, Grace Kathleen Martin and Namahina Kawabata.

Over on the tennis courts, Maui Prep is primed for a breakout season with a full roster led by fourth-year coach Tracy Halbersleben and assistants Lisa Poulsen and Erin Lepone. The girls team will be led by seniors Ava Merrill, Makana Boote, Madison Perry and Natalie Smart; juniors Keeana Villamar, Lola Trucco and Charltyn Hannon; and first-year players Victoria Campbell, Emma Gregg, Mia Merrill and Madison Quillin-Schlesinger.

The boys lineup includes juniors Nolan Brown, Valentin Haase, Isaac Hessel, Kilakila Parnell and Jack Sisco, and sophomores Jacob Jerome and Noah Schwatzlow.

Maui Prep faculty member Zach Bailey is the first-year head coach of the track team. He is assisted by Maichael Bolte and Roscoe Quint.

Defending MIL high jump champion Sydney Snyder leads the way along with four-year, three-sport athlete Olivia Bozich. Joining the duo are Bennett Bluh, Kieran McKinney, Luseane Taufa, Wilson Tinkler, Andrew Webber and Caden Wheeler.

Maui Prep Athletic Director Keenan Reader commended the coaching staffs in saying, “The Pueo are led by a dedicated team of professional coaches from our community who are committed to building character and citizenship in student-athletes through education-based athletics. We also thank the Maui community for their support and especially thank Troon Golf for the use of the Kapalua Golf Academy and the Kapalua Bay Course.”
