Members of the Lahainaluna High School surfing team worked hard and improved throughout the season.

LAHAINA – The hard-charging Lahainaluna High School surfing team completed another quality season last month as the girls lineup placed second in the Maui Interscholastic League standings, while the boys team took third.

Led by coach Luke Adolfson, the Lunas weren’t deep as a team, but, according to their coach, they learned to compete and improve as the season progressed.

“This is a hard-working group that showed improvement throughout the year. And what was most impressive was the academic improvement that they showed as the season went on,” he said

The 2019 Lady Lunas were led by Madison Runyon, who ripped and slashed her way to MIL overall gold medals in the shortboard and bodyboard events and led the team to a second place finish. Bryce Worth and Breauna Higgs also competed at a high level to add valuable points to the team total.

George Rocha, Kai Claydon, Ryan West and Nalu Ho made up the boys roster that held down second place in the MIL until the final meet at Hookipa. The Lunas dropped a notch to third overall in the final standings after that meet, but they still showed considerable improvement throughout the season.

“That was the impressive thing about this team. They just kept getting better and better as a hard-working group. Madison (Runyon) and George (Rocha) were the solid leaders of our effort, and the whole team is looking forward to next year as they mature and grow in their skills,” Coach Luke concluded.
