Maui Prep spring sports teams move up the MIL standings

The Maui Preparatory Academy girls surfing team currently leads the MIL, while the boys team is also shining near the top of the standings.

NAPILI – Maui Preparatory Academy continues on its pathway to present a well-rounded education to its students with a diverse athletic program that moves to the conclusion of the 2018-19 school year.

The independent campus at the foothills in Napili once again impacted the Maui Interscholastic League with strong efforts by its spring sports teams.

Leading the charge this season is the Pueo surfing team. The girls roster currently leads the MIL, while the boys team is also shining near the top of the standings.

Aaron Huish, Rob Lloyd, Andrew O’Riordan, Kawaiola Wendt and Matty Schweitzer make up an experienced coaching staff that mentors the young rippers led by seniors Yijie Wang and Alejandro Prieto, as well as juniors Harrison Crammond, Tyler Kirby and Dylan Smart. Rounding out the Pueo roster are sophomores Noelle Sheveland, Anthony Nunez, Ashley Nielson, Jolene Munch, Devin Leon, Jordoan Houglum, Britta Goerka, Slater Fleck, Lillian Bourland and Paloma Banto.

The Maui Prep tennis team also climbed up the MIL standings with its strongest performance in nearly a decade.

The Maui Prep golf team has moved up to the top levels of the MIL.

Primed to make the playoffs and coached by Tracy Halbersleben and Lisa Paulson, the team is led on the hardcourt by captains Eva Maria Kareneva Simpson and Banyan Neece. Senior Alejandro Prieto; juniors Madison Perry and Natalie Smart; sophomores Keeana Villamar, Liv Grete Rudat, Aiesha Pradham, Isaac Hessel and Nolan Brown; and first-year players Shelby Dresser, Jacob Jerome and Noah Schwartzlow make up the Pueo team.

Boosted by state-of-the-art coaching and world-class practice facilities generously provided by the Kapalua Resort and Golf Academy, the Maui Prep golf team has also moved up to the top levels of the MIL.

Mentored by Kapalua Golf Professional Chris Armanini and coaches Chris Black, Chris Shimomura, Mike Gilligan and John Kennedy, the boys team has secured second place in the MIL headed into the postseason tournaments. Captains Caleb Chumley and Griffin Gibson, along with Hudson Holland and Dylan Falk, led the scoring for the Pueo.

Senior Jakob Nussbaum, junior Jerome Samari and first-year players James Falk, Hailey Higgins, Namahina Kawabata, Grace Kathleen Martin and Emily Partridge round out the roster.

The track team is very small but has the unique opportunity to practice alongside the Lahainaluna High School team at the Sue D. Cooley Stadium.

Coached by Juli Caso, Bob Anderson and Al Souza, the Pueo team is led by junior standout Olivia Bozich; senior Megan Miller, who set a school record in the shot put; and state qualifier in the high jump Sydney Snyder.

The MIL Championships are slated for April 26-27 at the Soichi Sakamoto Track and Field facility at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships will be held the following week, May 3-4, also here on Maui at War Memorial Stadium.

The track team practices alongside the Lahainaluna High School team at the Sue D. Cooley Stadium.
