Women’s NCAA hoops tourney gives back to Maui youth
LAHAINA – basketbalIMAUI will present the third annual Maui Jim Maui Classic hosted by Oregon State on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14-15, at Lahaina Civic Center.
This women’s NCAA Division I College Basketball Tournament will feature Oregon State (nationally ranked ninth), Texas A&M (nationally ranked 17th), Eastern Washington and University of California Riverside.
basketbalIMAUI invites the public to watch by purchasing $10 game day passes online at www.basketballmaui.com.
This tournament will feature two games per day, with the first game starting at 5:30 p.m. and the second starting at 7:30 p.m.
The schedule on Friday is UC Riverside vs. Texas A&M, followed by OSU vs. Eastern Washington.
On Saturday, UC Riverside will play Eastern Washington, then OSU will play Texas A&M.
The event will also feature local food trucks, entertainment by Derick Sebastian (who recently showcased his talents at a Major League Baseball game at Chase Field and also for the Lakers at the Staples Center in Los Angeles), and thousands in prizes and giveaways, including multiple chances to win Maui Jim sunglasses and even a stay at the Hyatt Regency Maui.
basketbalIMAUI’s mission is to provide youth the opportunity to prepare for success both on and off the court.
While these NCAA athletes are on Maui for the tournament, they are also here to promote education, a healthy lifestyle and youth literacy by visiting elementary schools across Maui – including Pomaika’i, King Kamehameha Ill and Maui Preparatory Academy – to meet, read and speak with children about the important role that academics has played in their lives of being an athlete.
All tournament proceeds stay on Maui and benefit basketbalIMAUI sports programs, the Maui Sparks basketball program and Lahainaluna High School girls basketball.
