LAHAINA – Lahaina Canoe Club keiki coach Boi Crichton encouraged his charges to have fun this summer.

After an exciting inshore regatta season, Lahaina’s 12 Boys crew gained a ticket to the 2018 Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association’s state regatta and, per their coach’s advice, had the time of their lives.

The Lahaina 12 Boys crew of Rieley Holder, Kalaeloa Tancayo, Lio Vehikite, Xander Moffett, Shadd Blando and Leo Vehikite won the state championship in the quarter-mile race with a time of 2:19.05 at Keehi Lagoon on Oahu on Aug. 4.

The gold medal effort vaulted LCC to a fifth place finish with 32 points in the A Division of the HCRA State Championships for six crews or less.

Not to be outdone by their neighbors at Hanakao’o Beach Park, Napili Canoe Club’s 13 Girls crew of Shyla Rodrigues, Tiana Rose Naki, Taimana Cajudoy, Puliki Rogers, Quinsea Loft and Maile Cacal raced to a time of 2:25.66 over the quarter-mile course in their gold medal effort.
