Former Lahainaluna star athletes to hold basketball clinic
LAHAINA – Maiki Tihada Viela, former starting point guard for the 2010 Lahainaluna High School girls state champion basketball team, has now taken her love for the game to personal coach and trainer.
With her long list of accomplishments, including Star-Advertiser State Player of the Year, Parade All-American, California Storm Team Taurasi and a Gonzaga athletic scholarship recipient, Viela provides a great deal of insight for those looking to learn from her experiences and take their game to the next level.
“My path and passion has led me back home to start Heads UP Basketball and help the next generation of basketball players fulfill their dreams,” said Viela.
Viela’s guest trainers for the upcoming Heads UP Basketball clinics are other familiar faces of Hawaii girls basketball: Milika Taufa and Lia Galdeira.
Taufa was a starting forward for Lahainaluna and later received a full athletic scholarship to Indiana. Galdeira played for Washington State after high school at Konawaena and passed on a 19th WNBA draft pick by the Washington Mystics in 2016 to continue playing professionally overseas in Europe.
With the trio’s combined experiences, the clinics will cover a broad range of basketball skill development and training exercises.
The clinics will be held at the Lahainaluna High School gymnasium over the winter break.
The Fundamental Clinic for players seven years old and up focuses on footwork, agility and the basics of basketball. It is a three-day clinic from Dec. 22-24 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $90 for the full three-day clinic.
The High School Clinic is for seventh grade through high school players and concentrates on offensive and defensive skills. It is a four-day clinic from Dec. 26-29 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $120 for the full four-day clinic.
The Elite Guard Clinic for advanced high school basketball players highlights all skills that guards need to be successful. It is also a four-day clinic from Jan. 2-5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $120 for the full four-day clinic.
If you’re unable to attend the full clinic, drop-ins are welcomed for $40 per day. Clinic days also feature a lunch break; players can bring their own food/snacks or purchase snacks that will be available. Players are also encouraged to bring their own ball.
Space is limited, so Heads UP Basketball recommends you sign up early. The first 30 registrations for each clinic will be entered in a drawing to win a free one-hour training session with Galdeira. All clinic participants will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win other prizes.
