Local gymnasts meet Olympic athlete
LAHAINA – On a trip to Hawaii, Samira Amirova stopped by at the Kid Zone Maui facility in Lahaina to check in with local gymnasts.
Amirova, a world-class, internationally recognized rhythmic gymnast who competed in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, visited from Uzbekistan.
Amirova has been enjoying time traveling and occasionally meeting up with rhythmic gymnasts, inspiring future champions.
Her journey to the Olympics began when she was just four years old.
There are currently 24 competitive rhythmic gymnastics girls who train in Lahaina with coaches Sue Martin and Bogie Todorova.
“The visit was an inspirational event, and we feel truly honored that an athlete who is among the best in the world would stop by our gym to see our girls,” said Martin.
Martin is the endorsed state chair of the USAG for Hawaii. Any parent interested in finding out more about rhythmic gymnastics on Maui can feel free to contact her at (808) 276-9781. Classes start for girls as young as age four.
Educational workshops, sponsored by the USAG and run through the state chair, are also available for individuals who may be interested in learning more about becoming a certified rhythmic gymnastics coach or motivated to develop more programs here on the island.
