Lahaina Yacht Club to offer summer junior sailing classes
LAHAINA – Lahaina Yacht Club announced that enrollment is open for its popular Junior Sailing Summer Program, which is open to all students ages 9-15 who are interested in learning how to sail.
Space is available in Class D (June 26-30), Class E (July 10-14) and Class F (July 17-21).
Each session is held Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a limit of 16 students per class. Lunch is included, and a group photo is taken on Wednesdays.
The program is structured for keiki to understand the fundamentals and logistics of operating the vessel, master tying nautical knots and learning to sail in the water inside the reef in front of the club.
Instruction is geared toward beginners or those who wish to advance their skills to participate in Lahaina Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Race Team and compete in the fifth annual Dinsmoor Trophy Regatta in August.
A sailing instructor and many volunteers are available, on and off the water, to help facilitate each class and provide safety for the children.
Details and the registration form are located on LYC’s website at www.lyc.us/the-lyc-juniors-program/. The cost is $350 for non-members and $300 for current LYC members. Space is limited.
According to Lahaina Yacht Club, sailing continues to gain momentum as a popular sport. The program is an opportunity for keiki to learn the techniques and grow into a fun water activity for the summer or months beyond. Participants may enjoy sailing so much that they will want to become a LYC junior member.
