LAHAINA – Although Maui’s climate, terrain and scenery make it one of the world’s best places to ride bicycles, the island’s road and trail system is not safe or friendly for riders.

What to do? “Build a greenway,” said Lee Chamberlain, Maui Bicycling League co-founder.

Chamberlain will speak about the vision for the West Maui Greenway at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise on Tuesday, March 14, at 7 a.m. at the Pioneer Inn. The $10 fee includes a full breakfast.

Chamberlain is passionate about transforming Maui into a more livable community, where residents can commute to work, socialize and recreate by foot and bicycle.

The West Maui Greenway is a proposed 25-mile, multi-use trail that would transform the former cane haul road into a recreational ribbon connecting residents and visitors to the outdoors and community destinations.

A new event, “Love The West Maui Greenway,” to be held on Earth Day, April 22, at Lahaina Civic Center, will also be discussed by Chamberlain. The event will be packed with activities such as bike rides on the proposed greenway, keiki bike rodeo, yoga, and hula hoop games, plus food, beverages and lots more for a full day of family fun.

The community is encouraged to attend the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise meeting at 7 a.m. on March 14 at the Pioneer Inn to learn more about the West Maui Greenway and the new community event.
