LAHAINA – The four-month summertime billfish wrap-up produced an average amount of small blue marlin, but the big females were almost nonexistent.

June saw only three blue marlin weighed with another eight released, totaling 11 fish. Out of the three weighed and sexed, only one was female at 475.5 pounds. This would be the fifth largest blue of the year-to-date and the largest of the four-month summer catch.

The other two blues weighed were both males at 108.4 and 212.8 pounds. The eight blues released were estimated at between 100 and 350 pounds. I would assume that the 350 was a female, and the other fish between 100 and 180 pounds were likely males.

There were no striped marlin caught during the month, with 16 shortnose spearfish making up the majority of the 19 billfish weighed and the 27 billfish captured during the month.

July was the best month of the year for blue marlin, with 21 weighed and another 11 released. Thirteen fish were sexed, with eight being male between 106.2 and 218.0 pounds. Five were sexed female between 200.6 and 369.2 pounds.

Of the 11 blues released between 100 and 350 pounds, I would assume that the seven fish estimated between 100 and 200 pounds were male, and the other four between 250 and 350 pounds were female.

There were eight spearfish weighed, with one striped marlin released, bringing the monthly billfish total to 41, which was the third highest billfish total of the year.

The August billfish numbers dropped, with 13 blue marlin weighed and another eight released. Twelve fish were sexed, with eight being male between 110.8 and 167.8 pounds. Three were sexed female between 104.0 and 306.5-pounds, with the 306.5 being the largest of the month.

The eight blues released were estimated between 80 and 400 pounds. I would assume that the four fish estimated between 80 and 150 pounds were male, and the other four estimated between 250 and 400 pounds were female.

There was one striped marlin, three spearfish and one sailfish weighed. This brought the monthly billfish total to 26.

The September billfish numbers stayed pretty much the same, with ten blue marlin weighed and another 11 released. Five fish were sexed, with three being male between 95.4 and 155.3 pounds. The two other fish were female weighing 144.8 and 387.5 pounds – the 387.5 being the sixth largest blue of the year-to-date.

There were 11 blue marlin released, estimated between 75 and 250 pounds. I would assume that ten of the fish estimated between 75 and 175 pounds were male, with the 250 being female.

There was one striped marlin weighed and one spearfish released, bringing the monthly billfish total to 23.

The four-month billfish totals came to 47 blue marlin, two striped marlin, 27 spearfish and one sailfish weighed, totaling 77 fish. The released billfish totaled 38 blue marlin, one striped marlin and one spearfish, totaling 40 fish. This brought the four-month summertime billfish total to 117.
