Students earn medals at jiu jitsu competition
LAHAINA – The 808 Jiu Jitsu school, a Carlson Gracie Academy led by third degree black belt Christian Kennedy Grandi, achieved another outstanding performance at the annual North American Grappling Association (NAGA) Pacific Championships held on March 25 at the Radford High School Gymnasium in Honolulu.
The Lahaina contingent brought home eight gold medals, three silver and two bronze in the daylong tournament that featured all belt levels in gi and no gi competitions.
Leading the way for the 808 youth team were Kandi Finlayson, Jon Carlo Lat and Blair Viela with gold medal performances in their gi and no gi matches.
Dylan Lat earned silver medals in the gi and no gi contests, and Asher Halik put in a bronze medal effort in his gi matches.
The adult students of Grandi Sensei that brought home medals were Kawika Kinimaka (two golds in the no gi category) and Jordan Arakawa, who earned a silver medal in the gi bracket and a bronze in the no gi division.
The 808 Jiu Jitsu program has classes Monday through Friday at its training site at 11 Ulupono St. in Lahaina for youth and adult students interested in learning the martial art.
