Honoring 2014’s top Lahaina Harbor Charter Sportfishing boat captains

LAHAINA – Trying to come up with the top captain statistics for billfish has several variables. Just looking at total numbers doesn’t reflect all the factors in coming up with the final rankings for the top Lahaina Harbor Charter Sportfishing boat captain.

I look at all the variables in each category, give them a number and try to come up with a fair ranking. The final statistics are my own and are open to opinion and interpretation.

Now, the rankings for the top Lahaina captains

Capt. Jason Duby took back-to-back top honors as the top Sportfishing Charterboat captain for Lahaina Harbor for a second time in 2014, among the 31 captains that caught a billfish. He accumulated his billfish while fishing aboard the Start Me Up Again.

Jason weighed nine blue marlin (second most among the fleet) totaling 3,175.9 pounds (third highest blue weight). He weighed two of the top four blue marlin (669.4, 600.7). He also released two blue marlin (tied for second most released) estimated at 425 total pounds (third highest total release weight). This gave Jason 11 blue marlin captured (highest blue capture total) totaling 3,600.9 pounds (highest blue capture weight).

Jason weighed seven striped marlin (tied for fourth most) totaling 247.3 pounds (sixth highest weight). He also released six striped marlin (third most released) totaling an estimated 225 pounds (third highest release weight). This gave Jason 13 striped marlin captured (second most) totaling 472.3 pounds (second highest capture weight).

Jason weighed ten spearfish (most among the fleet) totaling 279.1 pounds (highest weight). This gave him a total of ten spearfish captured (third most) totaling 279.1 pounds (third highest capture weight).

This gave Jason 34 billfish for the year (second most captured) totaling 4,352.3 pounds (second highest total capture weight).

Grabbing the second place spot was Capt. Kenny Bauchman. He accumulated his billfish while fishing aboard the Die Hard 2, Exact, Finest Kind, and Reel Hooker.

Kenny weighed eight blue marlin (third most) totaling 3,181.6 pounds (second highest blue weight). He weighed four blues in the 500-pound club (568.8, 544.7, 533.4, 500). He released one blue marlin estimated at 200 pounds. This gave Kenny nine blue marlin captured (third most) totaling 3,381.6 pounds (second highest blue capture weight).

Kenny weighed ten striped marlin (second most weighed) totaling 377.9 pounds (second highest weight). This gave Kenny ten striped marlin captured (fourth most captured) totaling 377.9 pounds (fifth highest capture weight).

Kenny weighed four spearfish totaling 106.2 pounds. This gave Kenny 23 billfish for the year (third most captured) totaling 3,865,7 pounds (third highest total capture weight).

Taking the third place spot was Capt. Chris Wong. He accumulated his billfish while fishing aboard the Hinatea.

Chris weighed four blue marlin (tied for sixth most) totaling 1,578.2 pounds (seventh highest blue weight). Three of the blues were in the 400-pound club (499.6, 412.6, 400.2). He released six blue marlin (most blue marlin released) totaling an estimated 1,500 pounds (highest estimated blue weight). This gave Chris ten blue marlin captured (tied for second most captured) totaling 3,078.2 pounds (fourth highest blue capture weight).

Chris weighed six striped marlin (fifth most) totaling 311.1 pounds (fourth highest weight). He also released 14 striped marlin (most released among the fleet) totaling an estimated 502 pounds (highest release weight). This gave Chris 20 striped marlin captured (most captured) totaling 813.1 pounds (highest capture weight).

Chris weighed eight spearfish (three way tied for second most) weighing 225 pounds (second highest weight). He also released 12 spearfish (most released among the fleet) totaling 365 pounds (highest release weight). This gave Chris 20 spearfish captured (most captured) totaling 590 pounds (highest capture weight).

This gave Chris 50 total billfish for the year (most captured among the fleet) totaling 4,481.3 pounds (highest total capture weight).

Capt. Gabriel Rogers, having only fished the first seven months, ended up in the fourth place spot. He accumulated his billfish while fishing aboard the Jun Ken Po.

Gabriel weighed four blue marlin (tied for sixth most) totaling 2,138.3 pounds (fourth highest blue weight). He also released one blue estimated at 300 pounds. This gave Gabriel five blue marlin captured totaling 2,438.3 pounds (sixth highest blue capture weight). He weighed the largest blue marlin of the year at 684.9 pounds. Gabriel also weighed two 500-pounders (576.3, 533.2).

Gabriel weighed two striped marlin totaling 72 pounds and released another five (fourth most) totaling an estimated 165 pounds. This gave him seven striped marlin captured totaling 237 pounds.

Gabriel weighed two spearfish totaling 55 pounds while releasing another two, totaling an estimated 55 pounds. This gave him four spearfish captured totaling an estimated 110 pounds.

This gave Gabriel 16 total billfish for the year (eighth most captured) totaling 2,785.3 pounds (sixth highest total capture weight).
