Basketball events featured in the Maui Grand Slam

By Staff | Jun 19, 2014

WAILEA – basketball Maui and The Grand Wailea present the Maui Grand Slam: three signature community events benefiting the development of Maui’s youth.

The Maui Grand Slam kicks off with basketball camps in gyms throughout Maui. Basketball Skills Camps will be held at Lahaina Civic Center and Kamehameha Schools for players ages 7-13. The camps will be coached by a professional staff focused on teaching key techniques to becoming a great player.

This year, they are also hosting Next Level Advanced Player Camp at War Memorial Gym for athletes ages 14-19 who want to take their game and life to the next level.

NBA stars will visit both camps, meeting the kids and sharing tips on taking life and the game to the next level. All campers receive a T-shirt, photo and free admission to “Night of Shooting Stars.”

Camp is slated for June 23-27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is $99 per camper. Visit basketballmaui.com to register.

On Thursday, June 26, the Grand Wailea Ballroom will host basketball Maui’s first annual Poker with the Pros charity poker tournament. Guests will meet celebrity players, including a lineup of NBA stars, Olympic Gold Medalist Bryan Clay and other professional athletes and local celebrities. In addition, a delicious meal will be prepared by chefs at The Grand Wailea. All proceeds benefit youth programs of basketballMaui. Visit basketballmaui .com for more information.

Next, the fourth annual “Night of Shooting Stars,” a celebrity and professional exhibition game, is scheduled for June 28. Last year, more than 2,400 basketball fans filled the stadium to watch celebrity and professional players go head-to-head.

This year, more than a dozen NBA and celebrity participants will play right here on Maui, including NBA players Anthony Tolliver of the Charlotte Bobcats and Jeremy Tyler of the New York Knicks and Bryan Clay. Enjoy entertainment from the Hawaii All-Star Cheerleaders, Darren Lee from Maui’s “Burn’n Love” and many more.

Fill up on grinds from local vendors, get autographs after the game and win prizes, all while supporting Maui’s youth.

Tip-off time is at 5 p.m.; doors open at 4 p.m. The event is an annual fundraiser for basketballMaui youth programs. Tickets are $20 presale and $30 at the gate. VIP court-side ticket packages start at $150 each. Information and tickets are available online at basketballmaui.com.
