Maui powerlifters win trophies at Mainland contests

Maui powerlifters excelled in two separate state powerlifting championships on the Mainland.

On March 1, the Nevada State Championships were held in Pahrump.

Vijay Maulit, competing in the Junior Men Division, 242-pound weight class, was awarded the best bench press trophy with a winning bench of 485-pounds. He also took first place in the Junior Men Division deadlift with a 525 pound pull.

Llumel Magana, competing in the Open Men Division, 181-pound weight class, took first place in the deadlift, pulling 523 pounds. He also placed first in the Open Men Division bench press with a lift of 440 pounds. Llumel was also awarded the best Open Men Division bench press trophy. Vijay and Llumel are students at Arizona State University.

The California State Championships were held on March 8 in Chico. Six-time world champion and current world record holder Liz Cabe took first place in the 97 pound weight class, Open Women Division deadlift, pulling 336-pounds. She was also awarded the best female deadlifter trophy.

Collen Loo, three-time 105 pound weight class world champion, took first place in the Open Women Division, pulling 308 pounds.

All four lifters compete for West Maui Powerlifters coached by Craig Desoto. Their next competition will be the Hawaii State Championships on July 13 in Honolulu.
