LAHAINA – The Lahainaluna High School boys and girls wrestling teams made a strong surge at the 2014 Chevron State Championships last weekend, both finishing second in the overall standings.

The girls totaled 164 points to finish 14 points behind first place Kamehameha Kapalama, while the boys, with 146 points, were even closer – a mere 9.5 points short of champion Pearl City.

Luna wrestlers took four state titles on the final night, with defending state champ Bubba Jaramillo winning his second consecutive gold medal at 145 pounds, sister Carly Jaramillo winning her second straight championship at 140 pounds, sophomore sensation Lalelei Mata’afa pinning all four of her opponents at the state competition to take her second consecutive gold at 220 pounds, and Breena Dudoit Vasquez taking first place in the 135 division.

Other medalists for the Lahainaluna girls were Iverly Navarro (third at 97), Alexis Encinas (fifth at 101), Anika Pascual (sixth at 105), Diamond Freitas (fifth at 109) and Karino Arroyo Haro (fifth at 109).

On the boys’ side, Zach Wigzell took second at 113, and Christian Balagso was the silver medalist at 120. Other top placers were Jared Panlasigui (fifth at 126), Wyatt Chism (fifth at 126), Robert Campos (fifth at 152), Thomas Rosen St. John (sixth at 160) and Connor Mowat (fourth at 285).

The champs will join the elite history on the Honor Wall in the Lahainaluna Wrestling Room.
