Lady Lunas ready for state hoops playoffs

By Staff | Jan 30, 2014

LAHAINA – The Lahainaluna High School girls basketball team will not be recording their all-sport record, Maui Interscholastic League 100th consecutive victory this season after all. Local media sources reported last week that the Lady Lunas’ streak reached 90 – not the 99 that had been previously reported – straight wins before the MIL championship tournament being played at the Baldwin High School gymnasium.

Nonetheless, the Lahainaluna team, riding high as the top-rated program in the state, raced to their 91st and 92nd consecutive victories last week to win the MIL tournament championship and with it their tenth straight league title.

The Lady Lunas defeated Baldwin, 78-17 in their semifinal match-up, and then ran away from the Maui High Sabers 75-17 to sew it all up.

The Lady Lunas will now focus in on the state playoffs that will begin on Friday, Feb. 7, and run through Feb. 14. As the top-rated team in the statewide tournament, Lahainaluna will, for the first time, host a state playoff game at home at Lahaina Civic Center. The quarterfinal contest opponent on Saturday, Feb. 8, will likely be an Oahu Interscholastic League (OIA) runner-up.

After finishing in disappointing sixth place in this tournament last year, the deep and talented Lady Lunas are revved up and focused on climbing to the pinnacle of girls high school hoops this time around. The Lahainaluna team won the first girls basketball state championship in 2010 with an undefeated 17-0 record.

“We’re glad that all the talk about the winning streak to 100 is put aside,” stated Lady Luna head coach Todd Rickard last week.

“Now, we can all concentrate on the important matter of this state tournament. The girls are ready, and we are looking forward to a packed Lahaina Civic Center for our first round game. We know that our fans are the best in the state, and they will be out in force to support us here at home. It will be a night to remember.”

Imua, Lahainaluna!
