Maui Paddling Hui begins races

KIHEI – Maui Paddling Hui’s 2014 season got off to a great start with the Sarento’s race in Kihei. Over 150 competitors enjoyed the great weather and excellent racing conditions along the South Shore of Maui.

Aaron Pacourakis, CEO of Sarento’s, sponsor of the first MPH race of the season for over ten years, provides food, drinks and music at the end of the race.

The winners in the long course (7-8 miles) One-Man Division were Will Reichenstein and Danielle Kuck.

Top finishers in the Two-Man Division were Tyson Kubo and Robert Brede, Kealani Kimbal and Marjie Kahookele, and Christine and Paul Donovan (coed). The surfski winner was Michael Owens.

For the short course of 4.5 miles, the winners were: Women’s Novice – Lani Lee Morey; Men – Austin Talley; OC-2 Coed – Bear and Kavanoe Keahi; OC-2 Male – Michael Peabody and Zoltan Milaskey; OC-2 Female – Tobi Fisher and Allison Freeland; Surfski Male – Doug Posley; Surfski Female – Kathy Shipman; Standup Male – Josh Riccio; Standup Female – Mary Radke.

Next up for the MPH is the Lulu’s Lahaina race on Saturday, Jan. 18.

This race is sponsored by Lulu’s, and owner Ron Ponzo puts on a great awards ceremony after the race.
