WEST MAUI – Four Maui powerlifters shined at the recent WABDL Bench and Deadlift World Championships. The international contest was held last month in Reno, Nevada.

Llumel Magana, the 2013 world champion, proved to be one of the top teenage lifters again. In the Teen Men Division, 18-19 age class, he won the 181-pound weight class bench press at 435 pounds and deadlift at 535 pounds. He set Arizona state records in both categories.

Vijay Maulit took second in the Junior Men’s Division bench press with a lift of 473 pounds. He also deadlifted 501 pounds to take third place. Both boys are Lahainaluna High School graduates and are currently attending Arizona State University.

Colleen Loo, now living in Henderson, Nevada, competed in the Women’s Open Division, 105-pound weight class. She took gold in the bench press with a lift of 143 pounds. She also won the deadlift, pulling 319 pounds.

Lahaina’s Liz Cabe won her sixth consecutive world title in the Women’s Open and Master Division, 97-pound weight class deadlift. Liz, at 94.6 pounds, pulled a new world and Hawaii state record 339.3 pounds. She was awarded the best lightweight female deadlifter award, and became only the second woman in the federation’s history to pull over three-and-a-half times her body weight.

All four lifters are part of West Maui Powerlifters and are trained by Craig DeSoto.
