Lahaina Civic Center Gym to close in October
WAILUKU – The Department of Parks and Recreation announced that the Lahaina Civic Center Gym will be closed for the entire month of October to facilitate refinishing of the court’s wood flooring.
The work will include stripping the floor to bare wood, painting new graphics and game lines, and applying a state-of-the-art clear finish.
The department apologizes for this inconvenience and appreciates the community’s understanding and cooperation.

Cooney Surf Contest slated at Hookipa
PAIA – The ninth annual Cooney Surf Contest will be held at Hookipa Beach Park on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 7 a.m.
The contest is held in honor of Steve Cooney, a talented, revered surfer who passed away in an automobile accident in 2004.
Divisions include Super Mini Groms (6 and under), Mini Grom (7-8), Menehune (9-11), Boys (12-14), Junior Men (15-17), Open Men (Pro-Am), Teeny Wahine (13 and under) and Open Women, and a specialty event: the Invitational Air Show.
The entry fee is $25 for regular divisions and $30 for the Pro-Am, which includes a T-shirt and lunch.
Entries are available at Hawaiian Island Surf & Sport at 415 Dairy Road in Kahului.
Contest sponsors include Hawaiian Island Surf & Sport, H.G.A., Mama’s Fish House, Lau Lau Surfboards, Skullbase, Flatbread Co., Paia Bay Coffee, Mana Foods and Dooma.

Rotarians plan golf scramble
KAANAPALI – The Rotary Club of Lahaina will hold a giant golf scramble fundraiser at the Kaanapali Kai Golf Course on Oct. 26 to raise funds for Maui youth and to push forward the fight to end polio.
The tournament will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Four-member teams will vie for prizes awarded for closest to the pin, low gross (men and women), low net (men and women) and overall top team.
The club is seeking tournament sponsors, hole sponsors for $150 each, and players who will pay $100 each. The golf fee includes a party and prize presentation at Paradise Grill after the tournament.
Proceeds will be used to provide scholarships to Maui County high school students and to fund Rotary International’s decades-long campaign to eradicate polio from the planet.
