About Boating Safely course set
KIHEI – The new About Boating Safely (ABS) course taught by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be held at the Whale Sanctuary Building at 726 S. Kihei Road.
The class is now held in two parts. On Friday, Sept. 13, from 6 to 9 p.m., the new state law addendum will be covered. There is no cost if you have a current ABS card or are taking the Saturday class.
About Boating Safely will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $40 for both days and includes course text. The fee is payable on Friday night via check or cash. Bring your whole family for a discount.
If both days are attended, this class will satisfy the new Hawaii mandatory boat operator education that will be required as of Nov. 10, 2014.
The course covers general information about boats and maintenance, information on preparing for safe and enjoyable outings, navigation rules and aids to navigation, guidelines for operating your boat or PWC safely, what to do in case of boating emergencies, and laws and regulations to follow.
Many boat insurance companies discount their rates for class completion; check with your carrier. This class is also required if you are thinking of joining the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
