‘Groms’ compete in surfing contest at Lahaina Harbor
LAHAINA – Lahaina Restoration Foundation’s recent “Celebrate Historic Lahaina” festival included a keiki fishing tournament and the third annual Grom Magazine Surf Contest.
“Groms” ages five to 16 started arriving at Lahaina Harbor at the break of dawn. Mother Nature was kind enough to provide a one- to two-foot swell in what has been a waves-starved month on Maui.
With very light trades, the conditions stayed glassy for the majority of the event, and the waves offered contestable conditions throughout the day.
Standouts this year reigned from the West Side of Maui.
Lahaina local Summer Macedo won the girls 10-12 and 13-16 divisions, taking home $300 in prize money.
Also from Lahaina, Dylan Lehman put on quite a show and had the dough to prove it at the end of the day with $325 in prize money. Dylan won the boys 13-14 division and earned second place finishes in the 15-16 division and air show, pulling a super impressive inverted air reverse.
Dylan netted himself a ticket to California for a national contest in June, provided by Hurley.
Also ripping his way to the finals and surfing up a division was 11-year-old West Side local Ty Ty Kirby, who fought hard for his solid finish.
Here are the event results, with winners listed by order of finish:
