LAHAINA – A contingent of Lahaina weightlifters exploded to breakthrough performances at Sonny’s WADBL Powerlifting state competition on July 7 at the Honolulu Convention Center.

Elizabeth Cabe, Darnell Cristie, Colleen Loo and Siu Whitehead represented the West Maui Powerlifters team at the event that attracted some 200 competitors from all around the state to Honolulu.

Craig DeSoto is the coach of the team that trains at Valley Isle Fitness Center in Kaanapali.

Cabe competed at 97 pounds, Loo at 105, Whitehead at 114 and Cristie at 148, and all of the Lahaina team had breakthrough performances at the competition.

Whitehead led the way with a state record deadlift of 265 pounds for the mark in the Women’s Open and Women’s Masters categories for the 114-pound weight class.

Next up for the Lahaina team will be the World Powerlifting Championships at Reno, Nevada, on Nov. 5-12.

All or part of the team will attempt to set world marks in their respective weight and age classes at this top-rated event.

“Our thanks goes out to Coach Craig for all he does for us as a team and as individual competitors. He is always there for us and goes out of his way to train us. He works the practice schedule into our schedules, and even came in once on his own birthday to train us. He is a world champion himself and is really a great coach,” said Whitehead.
