By Staff | Jul 25, 2013

KAHULUI – The second annual 5K run and a 3K run/walk will be held on Sunday, Aug. 4, at Kanaha Beach Park in honor of Maui boy Kraig M.K. Vickers, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Aug. 6, 2011 during Operation Enduring Freedom as a member of the U.S. Navy’s Special Warfare Development Group.

Vickers, along with 21 other members of his unit and an additional nine U.S. service members, were all killed when their Chinook CH-47 Helicopter was shot down by insurgents while engaged in combat operations.

This event will be held in honor and remembrance of Vickers and his teammates, as well as to honor other military personnel with ties to Maui and the State of Hawaii.

The 5K starts at 7:30 a.m., and the 3K will begin at 7:45 a.m.

All registrants will receive a free T-shirt and are encouraged to enjoy post-race entertainment and various snack items following the run.

Awards will be given out to the top three finishers in several age categories.

Online registration will be accepted until midnight on Aug. 2. The entry fee is $35 for adults, $30 for military and members of the Valley Isle Road Runners and $20 for keiki 12 and under.
