Learn to play rugby
LAHAINA – It’s time for summer rugby fun with Maui Rugby. Free, open sessions are held where boys and girls, teens and adults, can learn rugby in a non-contact “tag/flag” format. Those who are ready for tackle can learn all the variations of the rugby sports, including Olympic Rugby 7s, Union 15s and 10s, League 13s and 9s, Beach 5s and all of the youth variations.
Sessions are held at 5 p.m. on Monday nights at Kenolio Park next to Kihei Youth Center, Lahaina Recreation Center on Tuesdays, and Thursdays at Kahului Community Center field.
Visitors are welcome to join in the fun, and participants need not attend every practice.
Parents are encouraged to join in the rugby touch sessions and to learn to become referees and coaches. Training for both will be available for free.
Pita Totau, a former U.S.A. National Club Champion with San Francisco Golden Gate and longtime co-captain of the Maui Warriors, organizes the Kihei sessions; Siua Lolohea, longtime co-captain of multiple state championship-winning teams at Maui Warriors, organizes the Kahului practices; and Nuti Pousima, a member of the first-year team of Mana O Maui in
2007 and the first U.S.A. U17 National Team trialist from Maui in 2008, organizes the Lahaina sessions.
