Fifteen Lahaina basketball players competed in the End of Trail Shootout Basketball Tournament in Oregon City.

LAHAINA – The Lahainaluna High School girls basketball team and Lahaina Girls Basketball Club send a sincere mahalo to the many individuals, families, businesses and organizations that donated to the organization’s extremely successful fundraising drive that allowed them the opportunity to take part in the End of Trail Shootout Basketball Tournament in Oregon City, Oregon, earlier this year.

Nearly a year ago, the club began this drive to finance the trip for the 15 girls on the roster.

Led by committee Chairman Don Rosenthal and parents Joanne Bates, Mike Bates and Aurora Matsuda, the families and friends of the girls worked tirelessly in the Lahaina and Maui communities to ask for financial help.

As always, the response was tremendous, the fund raising complete, and the girls enjoyed a very valuable training trip to Oregon.

Also, the EOT Tournament is noted as the number one venue for student athletes to gain notice from college scouts. Several Lady Lunas made contact with these coaches.

Lahainaluna High School football team co-head coach Garret Tihada addresses the squad after the Lunas beat Baldwin High School 32-0 on Friday night at War Memorial Stadium. The Lunas (3-0) claimed the Maui Interscholastic League first round Division II title with the win. Opponents haven’t scored a point against the Lunas this season. PHOTO BY DENTON JOHNSON.

The list of contributors included Atlantis Submarines, Roz Baker, Barnes & Noble, Chris Berman, Randy Blumer, Monica Chihara, Cool Cat Caf/Captain Jacks, Frogman Charters, Grand Wailea Resort, Hawaiian Isles Coffee, Hoaloha Na Eha, Hula Grill Restaurant, Leilani’s on the Beach, Kimo’s Restaurant, Hyatt Regency Maui, IJK’s Distributors, James Maulinn, James Ward Contractor, Jim Falk Motors, Kaanapali Beach Hotel, Kaanapali Alii, Kanemitsu Family, Kapalua Golf, Kapalua Spa, La Jolla Ipo, Lahaina Plumbing, Lahaina Prime Rib & Fish, Longs Drugs, Elena MacDonald, Mark Ellman and Mala/Honu Restaurants, Maui Advertising, Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Maui Beverage, Maui Jim, Maui Photo World/John Dudley, Maui Soda, Maui Vacations, Office Max, Ohana 5 LLC, Pacific Whale Foundation, Paradise Beverage, Pineapple Grill Restaurant, Robert Bluh Activities, Sakamoto Realty, Sansei, Sheraton Maui, Starbucks Coffee, State Farm Insurance/Chad Santiago, Tanikai Inc., Teddy’s Bigger Burgers, Lanny Tihada, UFO Chuting Hawaii, UFO Parasail, Wailea Beach Marriott & Spa, Westside Hoops, Hawaiian Heat, Leilani Pumano and the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua,

“Our sincere thank you goes out to all who helped us with this fundraising effort. As always here on the West Side, it was a community/team effort that will lead us to continuing as the top basketball program on Maui as well as in the state. Mahalo,” said Rosenthal.

On Friday, Sept. 21, Maui Canoe Club will host another “Paddle for Food” Drive. Bring one or more nonperishable food items and receive a free half-hour padding session in the club’s Hawaiian outrigger canoes. All donations will be given to the Maui Food Bank. The club will host four separate paddling sessions that morning at 7:30, 8, 8:30 and 9 a.m. Plan to arrive at least 15-20 minutes early.
