New program to challenge teens
LAHAINA – Lahaina Yacht Club is forming a new program for teens that will challenge their skills in a variety of water sports activities.
Refinement or development of sailing skills on a newly acquired fleet of fast Laser Sailboats will be just one of the challenges teens will undertake.
The goal of this program is to give teens a constructive outlet that is both rewarding and challenging, as well as guide them into leadership and self-governing.
Teens will play a very active role in the activities of this program and participate in a variety of ocean-centered activities. Ultimately, the club hopes to develop a group of young sailors who can compete against other clubs and even with adults in regattas.
The program will kickoff on June 23 at Launiupoko Beach Park with a Beach Party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where teens can hang out with friends, meet new ones and learn more about the program. There will be food, games and an opportunity to try out a variety of water sports activities (weather permitting).
All teens ages 13-18 are invited to the party. Membership in Lahaina Yacht Club is not required to attend the event, but a $10 Junior Membership will be required to participate in the program.
Through a generous donation from a club member, the first 30 new Junior Memberships will be free.
LYC is also looking for individuals and area businesses that can help support this program with donations of prizes and services.
