Luna surfers ride to second place finish

The Lunas competed at the recent Maui Interscholastic Surf Championships at Hookipa Beach Park.

LAHAINA – Lahainaluna High School sophomore Sierra Lerback led the way with her second consecutive sweep of the girls longboard and shortboard titles at the 2012 Maui Interscholastic Surf Championships held at Hookipa Beach Park last month, but her effort was not enough to carry the Lunas to the top in the team scoring.

Baldwin took home the first place trophy. Lahainaluna totaled 160 points to finish second to the Bears’ 184-point effort.

Luna junior Kaimana Kinimaka won the boys shortboard event, and cousin Kawika Kinimaka took sixth place in the boys longboard competition.

Candace Hanneman, with her third place effort, and Leilani Miranda in fifth place in the girls shortboard added points to the Lunas’ total.

In the girls longboard competition, Miranda was the runner-up to Lerback, with teammate Zoe Miller garnering fourth place.

Rounding out the Lahainaluna scoring was Casey Egan’s fourth place finish in the girls bodyboard event.

“Our kids did well this season, and we’re happy for them,” commented Luna coach Erik Jennings, who was assisted this year by Andy Claydon and Luke Adolfson.

“Our top surfers did really well, but we just didn’t have the depth that Baldwin had in the choppy, one- to two-foot surf.”
