By Staff | Apr 5, 2012

The volleyball squad includes (from left): front — Erich Skrotzki, Spencer Perieff, Kiko Fonohema, team mascot Naupala Christie, Tytus Lucas and Ansen Cabanilla; second row — Tita Akina, William Robinson, Semisi Filikitonga, Jonah Reyes, Ernest “Asi” Fatongia and Lucy Reardon; third row — Carl Yagyagan, Cyrus Kama, Marvin Sidon, Jonathan Lolohea and Kealii Frias; fourth row — Tomas Dreibelbis, Justin Natividad, Brandon Kaina and Sione Makoa Filikitonga.

Rounding out the roster for Coach Tommy and assistants TJ Akima, George Akima and Sean Gordon are senior Kelii Uwekoolani; juniors Mackey Veniegas, Ernest “Asi” Fatongia, Erich Skrotzki and William Robinson; sophomore Pousima Galoia; and freshman Ansen Cabanilla. The team managers are Tricia Kama, Tita Akina and Lucy Reardon.

“We are blessed to have the five returning players (Filikitonga, Lucas, Reyes, Fonohema and Skrotzki) to lead the way for us,” said Coach Tommy.

“The team as a whole is very athletic, yet they are inexperienced in this game. We need to work on our communication on the court and our passing, but we’re starting to get it. We’re learning every time out, and the kids are interested in the game and they like it… that’s the important thing.”

The Lunas will continue regular season play through April 21, with the MIL tournament scheduled for the last week of the month to be played at Lahainaluna. The state playoffs will take place on the Big Island in Hilo the first week of May.

“I send our thanks out to the Father up above; my wife Noe; Athletic Director Scott Soldwisch; Trainers Jon Conrad and Mikala Pino; U.H. Hilo volleyball coach (and Jonah Reyes’ dad) Tino Reyes, who ran a summer clinic for us; and the entire Lahainaluna community for allowing me this opportunity to help,” Coach Tommy concluded.

The Luna junior varsity team is coached by Tommy’s eldest son, Kapili Akima. The team roster is made up of Tomas Dreibelbis, Marvin Sidon, Benjamin Aquino, Edman Ragonton, Maui Melekiola, Patrick Duarozan, Jonathan Pono Lolohea, Cyrus Kama, Brandon Kaina, Sione Makoa Filikitonga, Carl Yagyagan and Kealii Frias.
