Junior Lifeguard Program registration underway

By Staff | Apr 5, 2012

WAILUKU – The county Department of Parks & Recreation is looking for young men and women to take part in its 2012 Junior Lifeguard Program.

The program is being offered to all young adults ages 13-17 on Maui and Lanai, along with a separate session for Hana. Space is limited and varies at each location. All participants must meet the age requirements by Dec. 31, 2012.

Teenagers applying for the program will have to pass a swim test – swimming 300 meters, nonstop, within 11 minutes – at the time of registration.

In North, South and West Maui, there will be two separate Junior Lifeguard Program sessions. Session I is from June 25 to July 6, and Session II will be held from July 9-20.

Registration for both sessions will be held on Saturday, April 28, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Baldwin Beach Park in Paia, Kamaole I in Kihei and Hanakao’o (Canoe) Beach Park in Lahaina.

Maui session registrants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Hana session will be held from June 4-8, and the Lanai session will be held June 18-22.

Training consists of familiarizing students with water safety skills, CPR, First Aid, surf and rescue techniques, ocean swimming, paddle boarding and lifesaving skills.

Although the program is free, there is a suggested donation of $15. Those interested in making a donation are asked to write out a check to Hawaiian Lifeguard Association-Maui Chapter.
