Shane Victorino goes to bat for local hoopsters
LAHAINA – Maui’s most well-known professional athlete will participate in this Sunday’s “Holiday Hoops” Basketball Clinic at Lahainaluna High School.
Organizers announced that all-star Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino will join in the event co-hosted by the Lahainaluna Athletic Department and basketballMAUI at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 20.
“This is going to be a very special night for our youth and their coaches,” said event spokesman Dan Williams.
“With the addition of Shane, it can’t get much better. It is wonderful to see one of our own give back to the programs he grew up with.”
Victorino played multiple sports, including basketball, during his high school years on the island. His wife, Melissa, played basketball for UNLV and will also attend the clinic.
The Victorinos will join world-class coaches in Ben Howland from UCLA, former Bruin legend Jim Harrick and NBC Camps founder and President Fred Crowell in presenting a night of free instruction for local players ages 8-18.
There will also be an opportunity for coaches and parents to meet and talk the game with the special guest mentors.
All attendees are asked to meet and gather in the parking lot below the Lahainaluna gymnasium.
Free Akina Aloha Tours bus transportation will be provided for Upcountry players, departing Seabury Hall’s lower gym parking lot at 4:30 p.m.
