Lunas battling Baldwin in fund-raising challenge

Help the Lahainaluna High School cheerleaders win the second annual Times Supermarket Football Rally.
LAHAINA – The Lahainaluna High School cheerleading squad is spearheading the West Side effort to bring home the championship trophy of the second annual Times Supermarket Football Rally.
The event is a community spirit and fundraising competition between Baldwin and Lahainaluna. The Bears faithful won in the inaugural running last year.
The two Maui Interscholastic League football powers take the long-running rivalry away from the War Memorial Stadium gridiron and out into their respective communities to see who can sell more chicken plates to support their programs.
Times Supermarkets sponsors the event, and sales go to support not only the football teams, but the Athletic Departments of the schools.
The Lahainaluna cheerleaders are leading the way in the challenge to bring the trophy for the most sales of the $8 chicken plate lunches to the West Side.
The squad, along with other student athletes, are actively promoting the event and selling tickets in the community leading up to the distribution date on Sunday, Oct. 30. The pick-up location will be the Times Supermarket parking lot in Honokowai.
The Luna cheerleaders are coached by Stacey Shibao and Nohea Ralar, two veteran leaders with years of experience with both the Lahainaluna and Lahaina Pop Warner programs.
The 2011 varsity squad is made up of seniors Kiana Yamat, Princess Misay and Jasmine Belkosky; juniors Kennedy Casco, Christine Mariano and Jissel Walters; sophomores Sherilynn Ramelb, Karen Galurado, Breea Yamat, Kelsey Schultz and Taylor Trout; and freshmen Courtney Ruidas and Kahakamele Hamakua.
The junior varsity team members are Amzi Tinajero, Jhereene Arcanado, Ahtziri Orozco, Itzia Berry, Mark Jugal, Lauren Bedard and Leiana Beyer.
Both squads support the Luna sports events throughout the school year and also diligently prepare for the MIL cheerleading competition and the state playoffs.
The MIL competition will take place on Nov. 12 at Kamehameha Schools Maui campus, and then the top teams will advance to the state championships in December on Oahu.
