This year, the XTERRA World Championship relocated from South Maui to the green and verdant Kapalua Resort.
The mountain bike and running courses are partially located within the old Village Golf Course (now Village Walking Trails).
To maintain the safety of resort visitors and the athletes racing the course, the Village Walking Trails will be closed to the public from sunset on Friday, Oct. 21, until dawn on Monday, Oct. 24. Only registered athletes and members of the XTERRA Team will be allowed to enter the Village Walking Trails during that time.
The mountain bike course will be open for practice runs for registered athletes only on the following schedule: Oct. 19, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Oct. 20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Oct. 21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Oct. 22, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Walkers and hikers on the Village Walking Trails should watch for mountain bikers during the above schedule, as the bike course crosses the walking trails at several locations.
The mountain bike course is wholly on private land, and organizers ask athletes and others to respect the landowner’s wishes not to ride the course outside of scheduled and approved pre-ride opportunities. The course routes through active farms, stables and horse trails. Mountain bikers are considered trespassers by these and other businesses.
