Martial arts tournaments set
KAANAPALI — Ola’a-nalo Eskrima Hawaii, in conjunction with The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, will present two martial arts tournaments this month.
The fifth annual Maui Open Filipino Martial Arts Tournament will be held Saturday, Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Westin Maui.
This event is being held in cooperation with ‘Ohana Martial Arts (Maui) and HOPE (Hawaii Organization of Pilipino Eskrima). Open to all styles and schools, the competition will feature padded stick point sparring, empty hand kumite point sparring, caranza and sayaw, single and team kata, and submission grappling. Weight divisions include light, middle, and heavy for men, women and children.
Registration will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. General admission is $5; children ages seven and under will be admitted free. The entry fee is $30, with additional events costing $10.

On Sunday, Oct. 23, at The Westin Maui, the WEKAF USA Pacific Island Regional Championship Tournament is slated. Weigh-in and registration will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m., and the event starts at 9:30 a.m.
This stick fighting contest officially sanctioned by WEKAF USA is the qualifying event for winners to proceed to the WEKAF USA National Tournament that will be held in Las Vegas in early 2012.
The winners in Las Vegas will compete to qualify to represent the USA in the WEKAF World Championships in 2012.
Entrants must be a current member of WEKAF USA to compete. Event registration forms are available at www.wekafusa.org. It will be possible to register to become a WEKAF USA member at this sanctioned tournament.
