Sue Martin recently joined the Maui Cheer All Stars.

LAHAINA — Growing in popularity all across the nation and here in Hawaii, All Star Cheerleading continues to catch fire across Maui as well.

The program will increase its presence on the Valley Isle as the Maui Cheer All Stars move to a new facility on the West Side.

Located at 154 Kupuohi St., Emerald Plaza E-11, the new studio will feature a spring floor and tumble track.

The facility will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. daily and Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon.

Recently, Maui Cheer All Star Director Marilyn Valencia announced the addition of a new coach on the organization’s staff, Sue Martin.

Director Valencia reported that Martin comes with years of experience and success not only in cheerleading, but also as a gymnastics coach and former owner and originator of Maui Gymnastics Centre in 1984 and Tradewinds Sport Center in 1999.

She also has 27 years of coaching champions on Maui, with over 100 state medalists.

She moved over to teaching cheerleading in 2007 and formed the Maui Cheer Babes, a team that won national titles in 2008 and ’10.

Martin has a strong desire and goal to form a dream team of extremely young cheerleaders here in Lahaina. She is currently recruiting three- to seven-year-olds to form a new squad and is currently holding free trial classes at the new facility.

Maui Cheer All Stars holds registration year-round, but to be part of the 2012 competitive team, interested youngsters need to sign up before October 2011.

Keiki registering after October must tryout for the team in order to compete.

Any interested male or female ages 3-35 may register for the program. Tumbling is also available with beginner classes on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon, intermediate/advanced tumbling on Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m., and open gym Fridays from 5 to 7 p.m.

Affordable drop-in classes are $10 per session. Call 268-3250 or stop by the new facility for more information.
